Review: Deep Redemption (Hades Hangmen #4) by Tillie Cole

deep redemption

He was born to ascend.
He was destined to lead.
He was never meant to fail.

Prophet Cain lies broken and defeated on the floor of his cell. A cell he has been thrown into by the one person who was supposed to stand by his side until the end. His flesh and blood, his only companion. His beloved twin brother.

Cain has sacrificed everything for his people. He left the safety and security of his life of study to infiltrate the infamous Hades Hangmen. He lived with them, rode with them, and then betrayed them. All in the name of a faith he can now feel slipping away from him. Like everything else he once held dear…

But then his isolation is broken. Another prisoner is brought to the cell next to his. A woman fighting her own demons and fears. A woman who Cain understands needs him, as he needs her.

As the connection between them grows, so does Cain’s resolve. He will right the wrongs he has done. He will atone for the evil acts carried out in his name. He will save the one he loves…

… Even if the battle takes him to the gates of hell itself.

While Mae, Lilah, and Maddie’s stories were heartbreaking, Cain’s will devastate you in its own way. What might have gotten lost over the past books is that Cain grew up in the same religion as the girls. Though he grew up on the other side, kept pure, kept separate, the only person he could rely on for the longest time was his twin Judah.

Until all that went to hell. Betrayed by the person closest to him, dead in the eyes of the Hangmen, Cain is once again alone. From the moment he learned the truth about the commune, he defied it, judged their practices, and even tried to fight against it. Though in that time he has made many mistakes, which most people would feel are unforgivable.

Now even his own people will try to break Cain, but you can not break a man that’s already lost. The only hope he has now is the prisoner in the cell next to him. She might even be his only way to redemption.

This woman is quite a surprise, as in I did not see her coming at all. Though in a way she’s definitely perfect for Cain. With her on the line, Cain will need to find a way to stop his brother forever. Judah is completely loco, lost in his delirium, endangering everyone in the commune. The way things develop will break your heart.

I felt for Cain, a man who lost his way, his family, his friends. A man who is completely alone in the world. Though it took me a while to get there. He was a walking contradiction in the previous books. I wanted to believe he was a good man, but some of his actions or non-actions had me doubted. Though Tillie Cole gave me a new perspective on him, that slowly made me understand why he deserves redemption.

There are a lot of big revelations in Deep Redemption, and I love that we get to know all these people so much better. Though I can guess the characters would wish it would all end. While the Hades Hangmen are one percenters they do crave some peace and quiet after a while, though we’re not quite there yet!
