Beards, brothers, and bikers! Oh my!
Identical twins Beau and Duane Winston might share the same devastatingly handsome face, but where Beau is outgoing and sociable, Duane is broody and reserved. This is why Jessica James, recent college graduate and perpetual level headed good girl, has been in naïve and unhealthy infatuation with Beau Winston for most of her life. His friendly smiles make her tongue-tied and weak-kneed, and she’s never been able to move beyond her childhood crush. Whereas Duane and Jessica have always been adversaries. She can’t stand him, and she’s pretty sure he can’t stand the sight of her…
But after a case of mistaken identity, Jessica finds herself in a massive confusion kerfuffle. Jessica James has spent her whole life paralyzed by the fantasy of Beau and her assumptions of Duane’s disdain; therefore she’s unprepared for the reality that is Duane’s insatiable interest, as well as his hot hands and hot mouth and hotter looks. Not helping Jessica’s muddled mind and good girl sensibilities, Duane seems to have gotten himself in trouble with the local biker gang, the Iron Order.
Certainly, Beau’s magic spell is broken. Yet when Jessica finds herself drawn to the man who was always her adversary, now more dangerous than ever, how much of her level-headed heart is she willing to risk?
First I have to say how much I love the covers for this series. I think it’s bloody brilliant, geeky and just perfect. Just looking at them makes me grin.
By now I kind of know what to expect from a Penny Reid novel. I know it will be funny, has a quirky heroine, delicious man candy, and some bizarreness thrown over it. Which I all enjoy a lot, and so far I haven’t grown tired of it. On the contrary, it’s a read I look forward to.
Truth Or Beard did not disappoint. Jessica James grew up with the Winston brothers, and has been crushing on Beau as long as she can remember. Now that she’s back from college, it’s Duane that catches her attention. No matter how much she fights it, before she fully realizes it, she has fallen hard. Which doesn’t go well with her plans of leaving town as soon as her student loans are paid off.
Duane has known Jessica was it for him since he was fourteen years old. Now that she’s back, it’s all hands on deck and ready to go. It was endearing to see how much he cares for her, and how he wanted to do things right. I certainly did not expect this side of him. Though there are some complications when he finds out Jessica is planning on leaving.
While I want to say there is a certain geekiness about Jessica, I was quite surprised how quirky the Winston brothers are. So from the start I’m already very much looking forward to reading the rest of the stories.
As for Jessica and Duane’s tale of love and woe, it was entertaining. They grew up together, constantly teasing and play pranks on each other. Now that obvious crush has grown into something so much more, and it was a pleasure to read.
